Q. What do I need to do, in order to pass the theory test?

Q. Do all vehicle tests cost the same?
A. The prices vary for different vehicles, please check the driving test cost link above as it contains the latest prices for car, motorcycle, lorry, extended test for disqualified driver, bus, coach, car and trailer, tractor and other specialist vehicles, taxi and private vehicles.

Q. What do I need to bring to the practical driving test?
A. You need to bring your theory test pass cerficate or confirmation of exception. Both parts of your driving license, the photo card and paper counterpart.

Q. What do I need to bring to the practical driving test if I have an old paper license?
A. You need to bring your theory test pass certificate or confirmation of exception. You will also need your old style paper license.

Q. What happens if I forget to bring the correct documents to the practical driving test?
A. Your test will be cancelled and you will lose the money that you have paid.

Q. I have lost my driving license, can I still do the practical driving test?
A. You will need to apply in order to replace your driving license. This can take up to 15 days and you may have to rearrange your test.

Q. I have lost my theory test certificate, can I still do the practical driving test?

Q. Can I take the UK driving test in Urdu?
A. The driving test has to be taken in English only. The voiceover used to be available for 21 languages including Urdu and Arabic until the 7th April 2014. This is no longer available.

Q. Should I take driving lessons before trying to pass the theory test?
A. This is not essential, however we strongly recommend that you take some lessons. This is so that you are familiar with understanding roadsigns and aware of different types of roads. It will make it easier for you to relate to the questions and therefore make it easier for you to pass the test.

Q. How long does the practical driving test take?
A. It takes about 45-50 minutes. The driving part takes about 40 minutes.

Q. What are the different parts of the practical driving test?
A. It includes an eyesight test, show me tell me section and the actual driving test.

Q. What is the show me tell me section?
A. You will be asked 2 vehicle safety questions where you will be required to show the examiner how you would carry out a vehicle safety check e.g. how to check the oil level on your car.

Q. How far must I be able to see for the eyesight test?
A. You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres for a new style number plate or 20.5 metres for a old style number plate.

Q. What happens if I cannot pass the eyesight test?
A. The first test that is done is the eyesight test and if you fail it, you will not be allowed to continue the rest of the tests. If you eyesight is weak, remember to wear your glasses or contact lenses to the test.

Q. What do I need in order to book my theory test?
A. You will require a provisional driving license which you need to apply for. The 'Driving test cost' link above should contain for information on how to do this.

Q. When should I book the theory test?
A. We recommend booking the test as soon as you covered the reading material, as the test is slowly becoming more difficult. An example of this is that as of 4th Dec 2017, most candidates will be asked to follow directions from a sat nav.

Q. What recent changes have there been to the UK driving test?
A. There have been 4 recent changes to the UK driving test as of 4th December 2017, they include the independant part of the driving test which has been increased from 10 to 20 mins, most candidates will be required to follow directions from a sat nav, changes to reversing manoeuvres and 2 vehicle safety questions will be asked.

Q. What are the reversing manoeuvre changes?
A. You will be asked to perform one of 3 possible reversing manoeuvres, parallel park at the side of the road, parking in a bay (either driving in or reversing out) or pulling up on the right hand side of the road, then reverse for 2 car lengths and rejoining traffic. Also the reverse around the corner and turn in the road manoeuvres will no longer be tested.

Q. What are the 2 vehicle safety questions?
A. They are known as the 'show me, tell me' questions. The 'tell me' question requires you to explain how you would carry out a safety task at the start of the test. The 'show me' question requires you to show you would carry out a safety task while you are driving. For example, how you would clean the windscreen using the car controls and wipers.
